When a creator sends a reward to another country they have a legal responsibility to properly declare the items being shipped, including the value of the goods, on a customs form. Any duties, taxes, VAT, or other customs clearance fees that may be levied on a reward as a result will be the responsibility of the backer. Each country will have their own rules in place with regards to imported items and we advise checking this prior to pledging.
Another thing to keep in mind is that not all creators will be shipping their rewards from the country that they launched their project from, and may instead be shipping them directly from where the rewards are being manufactured. It’s our expectation that creators are upfront about this while their project is live, but in instances where this information is not readily available we recommend checking with the creator.
It’s important to keep in mind that a project’s location does not guarantee that this is where rewards will ship from.
For EU-based backers
From 1 July, 2026, the EU will be removing the existing customs duty exemption on goods valued under €150. A flat duty of €3 per item type will apply to these shipments. Some EU member states have also introduced their own national handling fees on top of this duty.
Please note that these charges will apply per item type, not per parcel. You can read more about the EU import duty changes here.
If you have questions about a specific order, we recommend reaching out to the project creator or your shipping carrier.
