You can include images, videos and audio in your project description and updates via the contextual toolbar. This toolbar will appear each time you click the “+” button in the editor and will offer the option to upload an image directly from your computer, or embed media by pasting a URL.
After inserting an image or other media to your project description or update, click the green arrow in either the top left or bottom right corners of the media to insert a new paragraph and continue adding content.
Image specifications
Images must be 50MB or less. We accept most major image formats*, but for best results upload one of our recommended file types: JPEG, PNG, or GIF. It's best to scale your images to 700px or higher before uploading so that they'll appear properly on our site.
Keep in mind that all images are compressed when uploaded, meaning your images will have a lower resolution than that of the original file. This will be more apparent on high resolution screens.
*Please note that TIFF, BMP, HEIC, or HEIF file types can not be uploaded.
Animated GIFs
Due to the above image specifications, some animated GIFs may not function in our current editor tools and will show as static images. If this occurs, we recommend replacing any uploaded animations to WEBP files under 50MB.
Video specifications
You can embed a video in your project description or update by pasting a URL from YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Please note, it is currently only possible to embed a video in your project description with a URL. You can do so by pasting the video’s URL directly to the editor or via the contextual toolbar.
For video uploads, your project's video must be 5GB or less, while videos added to a project update must be 3GB or less. We accept the following video file types: MOV, MPEG, AVI, MP4, 3GP, FLV, or WMV.
Note: We take the video file you upload and create a 640 x 360 (16:9 ratio) version to display on your project page.
For video encoding, use WMV format in Windows. On Mac, use H.264. In both cases, the key variable is the “bit rate,” so look for that box. If it’s measured in kilobits per second (kbps), try 1500 to start. If it’s measured in megabits per second (Mbps), try 1.5. If the file is too big: make that number smaller. If the quality seems bad: make it bigger.
Audio specifications
To embed audio, simply paste a URL from SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Spotify, etc.
If you encounter issues embedding audio from your Bandcamp page, you may need to use the URL for your page that ends in ‘.bandcamp.com’, instead of any custom domains you may have set up. For example, if you have a track hosted at ‘mymusic.singles/track/one’, but your Bandcamp pagename is ‘imakemusic’, the URL you would have to use would be ‘imakemusic.bandcamp.com/track/one’.
Live video stream
You can embed a live video stream into your project description while it’s still in its funding period, or into a project update at any time, using one of our supported platforms: YouTube, Twitch, or Facebook Live. For more information, check out our instructions on how to host a livestream.
It is important to note, however, that a project description can not be edited after the campaign ends, and it won’t be possible to edit an update after it is published.
Can I add alternative text to images?
Yes! When uploading an image to your project description or in an update, you will have the option to enter alternative text (alt text). This can be used to write a short description of the image, for example, “a small brown dog sitting on a purple chair”. Say what you see and be specific, but make sure to also keep it brief.
If your project is live or in draft, and you’d like to add alt text to an image already in your project description, you can do so by clicking the image in the editor and choosing “Change image text alternative” from the options that appear above it. However, please note that after a campaign ends this will no longer be possible.
For images added to a project update, you will only have 30 minutes after publishing to make any adjustments, such as adding alt text.
How do I add a table of contents to my project page?
Adding a table of contents to your project is a great way to help backers navigate your story. When you add a heading to your project’s story this will automatically become part of an interactive table of contents. To add a heading, simply click the “+” button next to the relevant text and choose “Heading” from the dropdown menu.
How can I use an image to create a section heading?
To turn an image into a section header within your project description, select the image in the editor and choose “Use image as section heading” from the options that appear above it. Next, add the section heading text and click the check icon to save. When previewing your project you’ll now see the heading text in the table of contents on the left side of the page, and clicking on this will navigate you to the header image.
Can I embed a YouTube short?
Yes! To embed a YouTube short, you simply need to replace the “shorts/” part of the URL with “watch?v=”.
For example, if the URL of your YouTube short is https://www.youtube.com/shorts/12345, this would need to become https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12345 before you can embed it.
If you encounter any issues embedding your YouTube short please contact our Support team for help.
