If you are using Kickstarter’s Pledge Manager and ShipStation to manage the next stage of your project, you can find the steps below for setting up IOSS for your EU shipments.
As a first step, you will need to make sure that your account is on the new ShipStation layout. When you log in to ShipStation, if you see “New Layout. Try Now” at the top of the page, you will need to move to the new layout to use the settings referenced below.
Step 1: Configure IOSS number in International Settings
- Navigate to Settings > Shipping > International Settings
- Click on “Add a Tax Identifier”
- Add the IOSS number provided by Kickstarter. We recommend giving the tax identifier a suitable nickname (e.g. Kickstarter IOSS)
Step 2: Use Automation Rules to apply IOSS number to applicable shipments
You can use any criteria for the automation rule, but in the below example we’re going to use the Store, on the assumption that all Kickstarter orders come through a unique Store in ShipStation.
- Navigate to Settings > Automation > Automation Rules
- Click on “+ Create a Rule”
- Set a criteria (in our example a specific ShipStation store) and set the Action Type to ‘Set tax identifiers’ and ‘Bill International Duties to Payor of Shipping Charges’
Step 3: ShipStation Guaranteed Prepaid Duties and Taxes
At time of writing, this only applies to ShipStation accounts in the US or Canada. ShipStation released a feature to prepay for duties and taxes when using ShipStation Carrier accounts (e.g. UPS from ShipStation, FedEx from ShipStation & DHL Express from ShipStation).
To see if you have this feature enabled, navigate to Settings > Shipping > International Settings. If you have enabled this feature, ShipStation will automatically set all international orders to be DDP. If you want more granular control (i.e. only apply DDP to specific orders), then untick this option and use Automation Rules to apply DDP where applicable.
Until June 30, 2026, if using ShipStation Carriers with Guaranteed Prepaid Duties and Taxes to ship Kickstarter orders to the European Union under 150 euros, ShipStation will not charge any additional duties or taxes. For orders over 150 euros, ShipStation will charge duties and taxes at label print (this is in addition to the VAT collected by Kickstarter at checkout).
From July 1, 2026, de minimis will no longer apply so all orders shipped to the European Union on ShipStation Carriers with Guaranteed Prepaid Duties and Taxes will be charged for import duties and taxes at label print. Other charges may apply on a carrier by carrier basis; this is yet to be determined.
If shipping on your own carrier accounts, payment of duties and taxes will need to be handled by the shipper (if Delivery Duty Paid) or by the end customer (if DAP: Delivered at Place). This is not covered by the Guaranteed Prepaid Duties and Taxes solution provided by ShipStation
