Google Analytics is a service that provides creators with the tool to be able to track activity on their project.
As a creator, using Google Analytics on your project will give insight into the traffic coming to your project page in addition to seeing an extensive breakdown of referrer data, an overall conversion rate (such as how many visits to the project page are converting into pledges), ad conversion rate, and more.
The ability to access this data can help you to better understand how your promotion efforts are paying off, and where your backers are finding your project.
How do I set up Google Analytics for my project?
First, you’ll need to locate your tracking ID by following these steps:
- Log in to your Google Analytics account
- Select the “Admin” link on the bottom left corner of the screen
- Select an account from the dropdown in the “ACCOUNT” column
- Select a property from the dropdown in the “PROPERTY” column
- Find the tracking or measurement ID
- For UA properties: Under “PROPERTY,” click “Tracking Info > Tracking Code”
- For GA4 properties: Under “PROPERTY” click on Data Streams, follow the steps to set up a web data stream. At the end, you’re looking for the ID called “MEASUREMENT ID”
Your tracking ID should be in this format: UA-000000-01 or G-XXXXXXXXXX
Check out this help center article from Google if you need more help finding this information.
Once you have your tracking ID the next step is to enter it at the bottom of the Promotion tab in your project editor on Kickstarter before you launch your project.
If your project is already live, you can also enter this information through your creator dashboard. To access this, select ‘Dashboard’ from the creator tools menu, located on the left side of your project page.
Allow up to 24 hours from when you link your tracking ID for the data to populate in your Google Analytics account.
What URL should I enter as I’m setting up my Google Analytics property settings?
When adding a property to your Google Analytics you should use your main project URL. This can be generated before you launch (after your project has been submitted for review) in the Promotion tab.
Visit Google’s Analytics Help Center for more information on getting started with this powerful tool.
Please note: It is currently not possible to track traffic to your project from the Kickstarter mobile apps with Google Analytics.
Important Notice: Google’s Universal Analytics will be deprecated in June 2023. If you have not yet started using Google Analytics 4, we strongly suggest you transition to this at your earliest convenience.
