Picking the category for your project is something we leave up to you, the creator. However, if you are unsure which category is the right one for your creative idea, here are some things to keep in mind:
- What are you making?
All projects must follow Our Rules. While your project may fit into multiple categories, it can only be listed in one. You can also choose a sub-category, such as ‘Zines’ or ‘Comedy’. In those cases, the project will be listed under both the main category and subcategory.
- Who is your fan base?
Think about which community your project would resonate with the most, and use that as a guide for your category choice. The more a community cares about the area you’re working in, the more likely they’ll have an interest in what you are creating.
- Where does your project feel at home?
Look at other projects in the category you’re considering to get a sense of where your project might find the most exposure. It’s a great place to find projects similar to your own that have found successful ways to engage and promote their projects.

If I choose a subcategory, will my project also show up in the main category?
Of course! Thinking about creating a documentary film? If so, you can put it in the ‘Documentary’ subcategory and your project will appear on both the ‘Documentary’ and ‘Film & Video’ pages.
